William L. Megathlin collection , 1973-1976.

The William L. Megathlin Collection, 1973-1979, consists of .25 cubic feet of research material (six folders) regarding the Old Chatham County Jail (Savannah, Ga.). The bulk of the research consists of copies of articles and chapters from local reference material about the early history of the building; newspaper clippings about the building; and information about the December 2, 1978 escape of several inmates from the new Chatham County Jail, which replaced the old jail. The file of jail keeper's records of Sheriff John Ronan from 1897-1898, document transfers into and out of the jail and include commitments for lunacy. Also included among the research files is an NEA application for the adaptive reuse of the building following its closure in 1978 as well as correspondence with other scholars about the history of the building. The Old Chatham County Jail now serves as an administrative building for the Savannah College of Art and Design.

William L. Megathlin (b. July 25, 1943) served as the head of the Criminal Justice department for Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah Georgia during the time this material was collected. Dr. Megathlin collected the information about the jail between 1973 and 1979, during the time the jail was gutted of its cell block, leaving only its exterior walls. Dr. Megathlin researched the history of the building at local libraries and found the jail keeper's records inside a sealed room within...
